Joseph (7) and Susanna (4) came over today. Susanna always wears pink. Today, she was dressed in a ‘ballet suit.’ It was pink. Susanna does not take ballet.
Susanna looked through the open blinds out onto the street scene of E. 27th. ‘I see your car,’ she said. ‘I see houses,’ I said. ‘I see grass,’ she said. ‘I see trees,’ I said. ‘I see bushes,’ she said. ‘I see shadows,’ I said, ‘because the sun is out.’ Susanna turned her head and looked at me, curiously. She tilted her head, looked upward into the great abyss, and stated, ‘When the sun is out, you see your shadow but when it’s dark, you don’t.’ ‘But when it’s dark and you can’t see your shadow, is your shadow still there?’ I asked her. She answered, ‘Yes–pause–No–pause– No, it’s under the darkness.’
